I Stand All Amazed. Part 1.

Yesterday morning, my little guy had a meltdown. Full on sobs, nothing I knew how to do would calm him down... After a few minutes, and after he had requested to go to his desk for a break he started to sign "book". I thought he just meant one of his leapfrog interactive books. I gave him those books just to have them shoved back at me, he signed "book" again and pointed to something in his little cupboard. He wanted this...

This is a PECS device. It's the most basic of a communication device. Little Guy wanted it so he could tell me what it was he wanted. We usually don't use the one in his cupboard since the speech therapist has one she uses with him. Little Guy flipped through the book, found what it was he wanted, put it on to the strip, tore the strip off, handed it to me, then touched (I spoke as he touched the pictures) I want, to ride bike. This is the first time he has EVER requested the PECS, he wanted to communicate and not just point. After he did that, he instantly calmed down. No more tears. I had him do a little work first, and then I took him for a ride on his adaptive bike. He was as happy as he could be the rest of the day, no more meltdowns, only smiles and giggles.

That Little Guy never ceases to amaze me... I get to a point where I think I fully understand him, and he shows me something new he can do. He is absolutely amazing. I've been learning more from him, than I've probably been able to teach him.
